With an air rower, the resistance in provided by fans which are rotated when you pull the handle (BodyWorx calls this their "Variable Turbine Resistance System"). This replicates the experience in a boat: the tension increases as you row harder.
Note that the video below is of the KRX980 - the same rower but for a couple of console changes (such as bluetooth), so we've kept the video here FYI...
